While President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 to “free all persons held as slaves,” it was not until two and a half years later on June 19, 1865 when Federal troops marched into Galveston, Texas, that enslaved people in the last Confederate state learned of their freedom. This important event, followed by the passage of the 13th Amendment, officially marked the end of slavery in the United States. Each year, we reunite for what many call the second Independence Day in American History.

Following their emancipation, reunions became a way for formerly enslaved people to reconnect with family members they had been separated from. Today, reunions continue as a way to unite a community, fellowship with family, share information, and celebrate one’s heritage.

Past Lancaster Juneteenth events have included various fun activities, including educational programming on Juneteenth, a morning worship service, family-friendly games, food, music, entertainment, dancing, a car and bike show, and so much more. Stay tuned to learn what’s in store for our 2025 celebration!
