Hey AV explorers, Thomas here – if you’re looking for a beach day that goes well beyond just planting a towel in the sand, Redondo Beach is your move this week. About 1.5 hours from Lancaster, Redondo is the South Bay’s most walkable and activity-packed coastal destination – and compared to the tourist crush of Santa Monica or Venice, it still feels genuinely local. Add in a free live concert on the pier this Thursday night, and you’ve got one of the best low-cost summer day trips in the entire archive.
The Pier and Harbor area covers over 150 acres of land and water and offers something for just about everyone – boating, swimming, fishing, shopping, biking, and live music, with restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining, many with ocean and marina views. The pier itself is a unique double-loop structure that connects to shore in two places, making for a natural walking circuit above the Pacific. Over 30 businesses line the pier, and many more fill the International Boardwalk adjacent to it – think seafood shacks, casual bars with windows open to the ocean breeze, souvenir shops, and waterfront patios built for watching the sun go down.
Just north of the pier, King Harbor Marina is where the real Redondo charm lives: sailboats and palm trees frame waterfront restaurants including Bluewater Grill, Chart House, and the Cheesecake Factory, all along the harbor’s edge, with kayak and paddleboard rentals available dockside for anyone who wants to get out on the water.
This Thursday – Free Concert on the Pier:
The 2026 Summer Concerts on the Pier series runs every Thursday and Saturday through August 29th at Fisherman’s Wharf on the west end of the pier, with all shows running 6–8 PM and free and open to the public. This Thursday, July 30th, features Grateful to the Core, a Grateful Dead tribute band. The vibe is relaxed and community-driven – people show up with blankets and lawn chairs, grab food from the pier’s waterfront restaurants, and settle in for two hours of live music with the Santa Monica Bay as the backdrop. It’s the kind of summer evening that makes the drive from Lancaster feel like the best decision you made all week.
Making it a Full Day:
Get to Redondo by late morning to make the most of the day before the concert. Start at the Thursday Farmers Market at Veterans Park (8 AM–1 PM along the Esplanade, just south of the pier) for fresh produce, flowers, and local vendors right on the waterfront. From there, grab bikes from one of the several rental shops near the pier and take the Marvin Braude Strand – a 22-mile oceanfront bike path connecting Torrance Beach to the Pacific Palisades – for as long or short a ride as you like, passing through Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach heading north.
Back at the pier, the Seaside Lagoon is a heated saltwater swimming lagoon open seasonally from 10 AM to 5:45 PM and a great family-friendly option for the afternoon – it’s calm, lifeguarded, and right on the harbor. For dinner before the concert, Bluewater Grill at King Harbor is the local go-to for fresh, classically-prepared seafood at reasonable prices with a waterfront patio, or grab fish tacos and walk the boardwalk. Then settle in at Fisherman’s Wharf with a blanket and let Grateful to the Core close out your evening.

- 🎸 Thursday concert is completely free – no tickets, no reservation – Just show up at Fisherman’s Wharf on the west end of the pier by 6 PM on July 30th. Entry is first-come, first-served, so arriving a little early to grab a good spot is worth it. Bring a low-backed chair or blanket and grab dinner from the pier restaurants beforehand.
- 🚲 Rent bikes and ride The Strand – The Strand bike path gives you direct access to the pier, the International Boardwalk, King Harbor, and Seaside Lagoon, all the way up through Hermosa and Manhattan Beach. Rentals are available near the pier from Beach E Biking and several other shops. It’s the single best way to experience the full South Bay coastline without moving your car.
- 🐟 Don’t miss Bluewater Grill for dinner – Waterfront setting right in King Harbor, fresh daily catches, and a patio that’s perfect for a pre-concert dinner. Get there by 4:30–5 PM to beat the wait before the concert crowd rolls in.
- 🅿️ Parking is easy on weekdays, tighter on weekends – Parking is available in lots throughout the pier and harbor area at $2 per hour. On a Thursday, you won’t have the weekend crunch – arrive by mid-morning and you’ll have your pick of spots close to everything.
