Ann Diener, a fourth-generation Southern California farming family descendant, explores the rapid transformation of her grandparents’ farm into suburban development and industrial farming operations in her exhibition “The Invented Land.”

Her work investigates the ecosystems generated by technology, resulting in intricate architectural and complex visual landscapes.

California’s massive food production relies on controlling water flow, leading to environmental consequences such as water shortages, flooding, soil erosion, and subsidence.

Diener’s drawings demonstrate the complex, evolving landscape of modern-day agriculture, addressing inequality, water, and climate change.

She emphasizes the need for judicious water use, soil rehabilitation, crop rotation, cover crops, and adaptive farming practices in response to a changing climate.
