Quartz Hill – The public is invited to a new exhibit by artist Karyl Newman, entitled
“Selections From the Waste Wunderkammer”.
For five years, artist Karyl Newman has been documenting and collecting pieces for the
Waste Wunderkammer, a lay-archaeologist and anthropologist's view of our eco-relationship with
the Mojave Desert. A wunderkammer is a cabinet of curiosities, a repository for wondrous and
exotic objects.
This exhibit at the Antelope Valley Conservancy will display Waste
Wunderkammer items along with geo-located photographs and research into their origins. There
are also interactive displays and activities about our desert ecosystem, the impacts of discarded
trash, and regional wildlife. The exhibit is kid friendly for ages 8 and older.
The exhibition is part of the Maiden LA county-wide survey of art happenings, encouraging
the use of alternative community spaces as a platform for generative discourse and exchange.
The Antelope Valley Conservancy will be open to the public on September 8, September 22,
October 6, and October 23, as well as by appointment.
Ms. Newman will present artist talks on
September 22 as part of National Public Lands Day and on October 23.
