ZooLights at the Santa Barbara Zoo: A Magical Holiday Illumination Experience

Location: Santa Barbara Zoo
[Get Directions ➔]

Good day local adventurers, Thomas here with an enchanting coastal holiday experience. Just about 2 hours from Lancaster, ZooLights at the Santa Barbara Zoo transforms the scenic 30-acre hilltop zoo into a breathtaking wonderland of light. Running daily from December 12th through January 11th, 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., this immersive holiday event features thousands of handcrafted silk-covered lanterns aglow with more than 50,000 LED bulbs.

Walk through the Zoo’s beautiful grounds at night and marvel at illuminated lanterns showcasing animal and nature scenes that represent wild places from around the world. Unlike anything you’ll see during a regular daytime visit, this after-hours experience allows you to enjoy the zoo’s stunning Pacific Ocean and Santa Ynez Mountain views under a canopy of twinkling lights. Best of all, your ticket purchase directly supports animal care and conservation science at the zoo, making this both a magical and meaningful holiday outing.

Making it a Full Day:
Since you’re spending your evening at the zoo, start your day exploring downtown Santa Barbara’s charming State Street Promenade. This 10-block pedestrian-only walkway features outdoor dining, boutique shops, art galleries, and the Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market on Tuesdays. Grab breakfast at a local cafe, then climb the historic Santa Barbara County Courthouse tower for panoramic views of those red-tile rooftops and mountains.

For lunch, head to the nearby Funk Zone, a trendy waterfront district between the ocean and Highway 101 featuring converted warehouses with graffiti murals, tasting rooms, galleries, and farm-to-table restaurants. Try The Lark for upscale shared plates or Lucky Penny for wood-fired pizzas. After lunch, stroll down to Stearns Wharf, California’s oldest working wharf dating back to 1872, where you can browse shops, enjoy ocean views, and visit the Sea Center. Time your arrival at the zoo for 4:30 p.m. opening to maximize your ZooLights experience before the 8:30 p.m. closing.

Thomas’s Local Tips:

  • 🎟️ Buy tickets in advance – ZooLights is a popular event and dates may sell out, especially on weekends and closer to the holidays. Purchase online at sbzoo.org/zoolights.

  • 🧥 Coastal evening chill – Even in Southern California, December evenings near the ocean can be surprisingly cool. Bring layers, including jackets for kids, as you’ll be walking outdoors for the entire experience.

  • 🍽️ Dinner planning – Food and beverage will be available for purchase at the zoo during ZooLights, but selections may be limited. Consider having a substantial late lunch or bringing snacks, especially if you have young children.

  • 🅿️ Parking heads-up – The zoo’s parking lot can fill early, especially on summer days and weekends. Parking costs $11. Arrive by 4:00 p.m. to secure a spot, or consider parking in downtown Santa Barbara and taking a rideshare to the zoo.

  • 🦒 Support conservation – Remember that proceeds from your ZooLights ticket directly benefit the animals. You’re enjoying a beautiful holiday experience while supporting important conservation work!

Nature’s calling, it’s time to pick up… See you out there!
