Hey AV explorers, Thomas here with a day trip that pulls you north up one of the most breathtaking stretches of highway in the entire American West – roughly two hours from the Antelope Valley – into a landscape so otherworldly it feels like another planet dropped into the shadow of the Sierra Nevada. Alabama Hills National Scenic Area covers more than 19,000 acres of rounded granite boulders, sweeping desert flats, and natural arches framing a view that will stop you cold the moment you step out of the car. The air is crisp and clean at 3,700 feet, the silence is enormous, and the scenery has a way of making every worry you drove up with feel genuinely small.

Hikers, rock scramblers, film buffs, and stargazers all have a reason to show up. The Mobius Arch Trail is the undisputed highlight – a short 0.6-mile loop that leads to a naturally formed stone arch perfectly framing Mount Whitney in the background, and one of the most photographed spots in all of California for very good reason. Beyond that, miles of dirt roads wind through the boulders for easy exploration on foot or by vehicle, with dozens of named arches and formations tucked around every bend. History lovers will recognize the landscape immediately – Alabama Hills has served as the backdrop for over 400 films and TV productions, from old John Wayne Westerns to modern blockbusters. Plan on a full day – this place reveals itself slowly and rewards every extra hour you give it.

Making it a Full Day:
When you’re ready to refuel, Lone Pine delivers. The Alabama Hills Café & Bakery right on Main Street is a local institution – a no-frills, full-hearted diner serving enormous breakfasts and lunches that will fuel you for a full afternoon in the rocks. Get there early on weekends; the locals know what they’re doing.

For something with a little more atmosphere, the Seasons Restaurant at the Dow Villa Hotel has been feeding travelers and climbers since 1927, with hearty, unpretentious plates and the kind of worn-in Western character that no newer place can manufacture. On the drive back south, the Alabama Hills Ice Cream & Bakery is worth a stop for a scoop before you hit the highway, a small-town treat that pairs perfectly with the long, golden-hour drive back down 395.

Thomas’s Local Tips:

  • 🌄 Catch the sunrise from the arch – Mobius Arch at first light with Mount Whitney turning gold behind it is one of the genuinely transcendent experiences in this part of the state. Set that alarm and get out there before the tour groups arrive.
  • 🎬 Do the Film History Loop – Grab a free film location map from the Lone Pine Film History Museum and spend an hour matching the rock formations to the old Western posters inside. It completely changes how you see the landscape.
  • 🥾 For a bigger day – continue past the Rock Pool up to Bulldog Motorway and push to Castro Peak – the ridge views toward the ocean are stunning and most casual visitors never make it that far, so the trail thins out considerably.
  • 🌌 Stay for the stars – Alabama Hills is one of the darkest accessible skies in Southern California. If you can time it around a new moon and stay past dark, the Milky Way overhead is unforgettable. Bring a blanket and a red-light headlamp.
  • 🚗 Stick to marked roads in the boulders – The dirt roads are open to vehicles but some routes are sandy and soft in spots. A standard car handles most of them fine at low speed, but watch your clearance and never push past a road closure sign – conditions change seasonally.

Nature’s calling, it’s time to pick up… See you out there!
