Get there early on weekends; the locals know what they’re doing.
For something with a little more atmosphere, the Seasons Restaurant at the Dow Villa Hotel has been feeding travelers and climbers since 1927, with hearty, unpretentious plates and the kind of worn-in Western character that no newer place can manufacture. On the drive back south, the Alabama Hills Ice Cream & Bakery is worth a stop for a scoop before you hit the highway, a small-town treat that pairs perfectly with the long, golden-hour drive back down 395.
