Good day local adventurers, Thomas here with another mountain escape.
Less than two hours from the Antelope Valley, Mount Baldy Village sits along Mount Baldy Road in the San Gabriel Mountains, surrounded by steep canyon walls, tall pines, and the cool flow of San Antonio Creek. At about 4,193 feet, the village serves as the main gateway to Mount San Antonio — the highest peak in Los Angeles County at 10,064 feet.
Start your morning at the Mt. Baldy Visitor Center, a historic schoolhouse managed by the U.S. Forest Service, open on weekends with local maps and exhibits about the mountain’s history and wildlife. From there, you can take a short stroll along the creek or drive up to nearby trailheads within the Angeles National Forest.
For hikers, the Mount Baldy Trail begins right from the village, climbing steadily through forest and canyon toward the summit. If you’re looking for something gentler, enjoy a picnic near the creek or explore the day-use area — open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
When it’s time to recharge, stop in at the Mt. Baldy Lodge for a hearty meal and a bit of rustic mountain charm. Just up the road, the Mount Baldy Resort offers chairlift rides and access to high-elevation trails during summer and skiing in winter (check seasonal conditions before you go).
As the sun sets behind the ridges, golden light spills across the canyon — a quiet, timeless scene in the heart of Southern California’s high country.Thomas’s Local Tips:
