Hey AV explorers, Thomas here – if the July heat has you dreaming of tall trees, koi ponds, and somewhere genuinely cool and quiet, Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge is exactly the escape you need this week. Just about an hour from Lancaster, Descanso sits tucked into the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, and the moment you step under its cathedral canopy of ancient Coast Live Oaks, the temperature drops and the noise of summer disappears. It’s one of those places that earns its name – descanso means “rest” in Spanish – and it delivers on that promise every single time.
Spread across 150 acres, Descanso is home to nine distinct botanical collections that make it genuinely different from visit to visit and season to season. The centerpiece is the largest camellia garden in the United States – over 40,000 plants – but summer is peak season for the sprawling 5-acre International Rosarium, where thousands of roses line the paths in full bloom. From there, the Japanese Garden leads you across arched bridges over koi-filled streams to the serene Full Moon Tea House, one of the most peaceful spots in the entire LA area. The oak woodland trails wind past a redwood grove, a bird sanctuary, a working stream, and a lake where ducks and herons hold court in the shade. Admission is $15 for adults, $11 for seniors and students, and $5 for children ages 5–12. Children 4 and under are free, and parking is also free. This Thursday – Free Summer Concert with Admission:
Descanso’s Summer Music and Dance Series lands on Thursday, July 23rd, with live world music performances on two outdoor stages starting in the evening – included with your regular admission ticket, no reservations required. It’s the perfect reason to plan a Thursday visit, arriving in the afternoon to explore the gardens at a leisurely pace and staying as the day cools and the music starts. The gardens are open until 7 PM in summer, giving you a long, unhurried day.
Making it a Full Day:
Arrive at opening (9 AM) to have the oak woodland trails largely to yourself and catch the soft morning light on the rose garden – the International Rosarium is at its best before midday heat sets in. Pick up a map at the entrance and start with the Camellia Forest, then loop through the Japanese Garden and cross to the Full Moon Tea House. The Descanso Railroad – a miniature ride-on train that winds through the natural landscape – is a hit with kids and runs Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for a small additional fee.
Grab lunch at Café Descanso or bring your own food to enjoy at the picnic tables near Guest Services. The Sturt Haaga Gallery, an on-site art gallery included with admission, is worth a stop before you head out to the Thursday evening concert. If you want to make a dinner of it, the Farmhouse restaurant on the grounds offers a full sit-down dining experience and guests with reservations don’t need advance tickets.

- 🎟️ Buy tickets online before you go – Non-members must purchase tickets in advance at descansogardens.org. Walk-up tickets are not available for regular daytime admission, so don’t show up without booking ahead.
- 🌳 Go for the shade, not just the flowers – Descanso’s oak woodland is the real secret weapon on a hot July day. The ancient Coast Live Oaks create a genuine forest canopy that keeps temperatures noticeably cooler than the surrounding area.
