Good day local adventurers, Thomas here with another valley escape.
Just under three hours from the Antelope Valley, Green Valley Lake is a quiet alpine retreat tucked high in the San Bernardino Mountains. At 6,800 feet, it’s known as “the Hidden Gem of the San Bernardinos” – a small lake village surrounded by pines, crisp mountain air, and calm blue water.
Start your morning with a lakeside walk or cast a line – Green Valley Lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout from May through October, and fishing passes are available on-site (a valid California fishing license is required for ages 16+). Prefer paddling? Rent a kayak or rowboat – gas motors aren’t allowed, keeping the water peaceful and clear.
For hikers, the Green Valley Lake Trail offers a gentle loop through shaded forest, while nearby Crab Flats or Butler Peak trails deliver sweeping views of the San Bernardino range.
When you’re ready to refuel, stop by the Malt Shoppe for burgers and milkshakes, or the Lake Inn for a cozy mountain meal. Just a short drive away, Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs make for easy side trips.
As evening falls, the mountain sky lights up – stars shimmer over the lake, and the quiet settles in like nowhere else in Southern California.
Thomas’s Local Tips:
- 🌲 Start early – mornings are cool, calm, and perfect for lake walks.
- 🎣 Bring your license – California fishing permits (16+) and local day passes are both required.
- 🥾 Check road access – Butler Peak and other fire lookouts can close seasonally.
- ☕ Stop by the village – grab coffee or snacks at the café before hitting the trails.
- 📸 Chase the glow – sunrise mist and golden light at sunset make the best photo windows.
Nature’s calling, it’s time to pick up… See you out there!
