Hey AV explorers, Thomas here with a day trip that takes you just 30-45 minutes south down the 14 and into a world that feels nothing like the high desert. Placerita Canyon Nature Center in Newhall is one of Southern California’s most underrated free outdoor gems, and mid-March is one of the best times to visit.
The creek is flowing after the winter rains, spring wildflowers are pushing through the chaparral and oak woodland, and if conditions are right, there’s a seasonal waterfall waiting at the end of the trail.
Before you hit the trails, spend a few minutes inside the Nature Center – live reptile displays, a rehabilitated bird of prey exhibit, and a live beehive you can watch in action. It’s a great primer on what you’re about to walk through. Check their calendar, they always have great events going on for the kids!
There are many different trails that can be accessed from the main canyon trail. Before heading out, take a walk on the short Heritage Trail – it’s partly paved, passes the restored 1920 Walker Cabin, and takes you right to the Oak of the Golden Dream, where California’s first gold discovery was made in 1842.
Making it a Full Day:
After the canyon, it’s a five-minute drive into Old Town Newhall for lunch. Newhall Refinery is the go-to, a well-loved gastropub with craft beers, a scratch kitchen, and a great sidewalk patio. Old Town Junction on the same block is another solid option with a relaxed American fare vibe, and the whole stretch of Old Town Newhall is worth a wander.
If you have energy left, William S. Hart Museum & Park is five minutes away – free admission, panoramic valley views, and a stunning hilltop mansion that belonged to one of Hollywood’s original cowboy stars.
Thomas’s Local Tips:
- 🌊 Check recent rainfall before you go – The waterfall is seasonal and rain-dependent. After this winter’s precipitation, conditions look favorable, but the canyon is worth the trip either way.
- 👟 Wear trail shoes with grip – Creek crossings and rocky terrain on the Waterfall Trail make sandals and flat sneakers a bad idea.
- 🐍 Rattlesnakes are active in mid-March – Stay on trail, watch where you step, and give any snake you encounter plenty of space.
- 🦅 Don’t skip the Nature Center – It’s free, takes 20 minutes, and volunteers often have a live owl or hawk out. Kids love it.
- 🎒 Pack water and a snack – No services once you leave the trailhead. Bring in more water than you think you’ll need for 5+ miles of hiking.
