Good day local adventurers, Thomas here with another valley escape. Trade the desert heat for cool mountain air with a day trip along Angeles Crest Highway, a winding scenic byway just over an hour from Lancaster. Known for its breathtaking ridgelines, alpine forests, and dramatic overlooks, this high-altitude drive through the San Gabriel Mountains offers a perfect nature recharge.
Stretching over 60 miles through the Angeles National Forest, the highway begins in La Cañada Flintridge and climbs above 7,000 feet, with endless pullouts, hiking trails, and shaded picnic spots. Originally built in the 1920s, this historic road offers a refreshing mountain escape - all without leaving L.A. County.
Start your drive in the morning and stop for a short hike to Switzer Falls or explore the peaceful pine forests at Mount Waterman. Along the way, you'll discover trailheads, scenic turnouts, and picnic areas perfect for lunch with a view. While iconic roadside stop Newcomb’s Ranch remains closed, you can pack your own picnic or swing by La Cañada Flintridge on your way home for a hearty meal.
Thomas's Local Tips:
- 🌄 Start early for cooler temps and light traffic – Beat the heat and crowds by arriving before 10 a.m. Early hours offer crisp air, soft light, and the best chance to spot deer or hawks in the trees.
- 🥾 Bring solid hiking shoes – Trails like Switzer Falls (3.5 mi) and Mount Waterman (5.5 mi loop) offer quiet forest paths, shade, and rewarding views. For lighter treks, try Islip Saddle, a peaceful spot with wide vistas and shorter trail options.
- 📍 Top photo ops – Don’t miss Eaton Saddle, Red Box Gap, or Cloudburst Summit. Each provides panoramic shots of canyons and peaks, especially in the golden hour light.
- 📸 Sunset magic – Golden hour is spectacular along the ridgelines. Find a turnout near Mount Wilson Road or Red Box and stick around for twilight when the city lights start to flicker far below.
- 🧊 Weather warning – Certain weather conditions can shut down sections of the highway. Always check Caltrans road conditions before heading up during cooler months.
