Valley Views to Hollywood Hills: Hollywood Sign Hiking Day Trip Guide
2958-2978 Canyon Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90068
[Get Directions ➔]
Good day local adventurers, Thomas here with another valley escape. This week we're trading desert vistas for iconic city panoramas. Beat the AV heat and head up into the Hollywood Hills for one of LA's most legendary hikes – the Hollywood Sign trail.
Just under a 1.5 hr drive (depending on traffic of course) lies the Hollywood Sign via the Bronson Canyon approach, offering one of Los Angeles' most rewarding urban hiking experiences. The trail winds through Griffith Park's chaparral-covered hills, providing sweeping views of the San Fernando Valley, downtown LA skyline, and of course, up-close encounters with the world-famous 50-foot tall letters that have symbolized the entertainment industry since 1923. The moderate 6-mile round trip hike gains about 1,100 feet in elevation, making it accessible for most fitness levels while still providing a satisfying workout.
After conquering the Hollywood Sign, visitors can explore nearby Griffith Observatory for stunning city views and astronomical exhibits, or venture into the heart of Hollywood to walk the Walk of Fame and catch a show at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre. For those seeking more outdoor adventure, Runyon Canyon offers additional hiking with equally impressive vistas, while the trendy neighborhoods of Los Feliz and Silver Lake provide excellent dining and shopping opportunities. The combination of iconic landmarks, panoramic views, and Hollywood culture makes the Hollywood Sign hike an ideal anchor point for a full day of Los Angeles exploration.
Thomas's Local Tips:
-
🌅 Start early to beat crowds and heat - The trail can get packed by mid-morning, especially on weekends. Aim to start hiking by 7 AM for the best experience and cooler temperatures.
-
🚗 Park strategically in the neighborhood - Street parking near Bronson Canyon is limited and heavily regulated. Look for spots on Canyon Drive or Bronson Avenue, but respect residential parking signs and neighbors.
-
💧 Bring plenty of water and sun protection - The exposed trail offers little shade, and the Southern California sun can be intense. Pack at least 32 oz of water per person and wear a hat and sunscreen.
-
📸 Respect the barriers and stay on trail - The Hollywood Sign is protected by fences and security cameras. Enjoy photos from designated viewpoints and stick to marked trails to preserve the area and avoid hefty fines.
Nature's calling, it's time to pickup... See you out there!
