Hey AV explorers, Thomas here – if the desert heat has you dreaming of pine trees, cool mountain air, and a town that feels like a different world entirely, Idyllwild is calling your name this week. About 2 to 2.5 hours from Lancaster, tucked high in the San Jacinto Mountains above Palm Springs, Idyllwild sits at 5,400 feet elevation, which means temperatures here run roughly 25-30 degrees cooler than the desert floor – exactly the kind of relief the AV needs heading into summer.

Idyllwild has a way of transcending typical mountain terrain and transporting you to another dimension entirely, and it's easy to see why once you arrive. One of the most popular things to do is simply walk through the woods along Strawberry Creek, which flows right through the center of town – many of the local lodges and cafés are built right up against it. The town itself was originally named "Strawberry Valley" for the wild strawberries that used to grow throughout the area, and that same laid-back, nature-first character still defines it today. Idyllwild has been named one of the 100 Best Small Art Towns in America, with more than 15 art galleries featuring local artists, plus rock shops, vintage stores, and a real sense of creative community.

For hikers, this is a serious destination. Over 275 miles of trails crisscross the surrounding mountains and forest roads, ranging from easy strolls to full-day summit treks. If you want something approachable, the Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail is a 4.6-mile out-and-back with only about 836 feet of elevation gain and plenty of shade – a great family-friendly option. For a quick, easy win, The Grotto at Strawberry Creek is a short, scenic walk that ends at a small waterfall and pool, perfect for cooling off. If you're up for more of a challenge, the hike to Suicide Rock rewards you with sweeping views of Lily Rock, the massive granite formation visible right from downtown.

Making it a Full Day:
Start in town – grab breakfast or a pastry at Higher Grounds Coffee before hitting the trails. After your hike, head back into Idyllwild for lunch and an afternoon of wandering Main Street's galleries, rock shops, and boutiques. Honey Bunns Bakery is a must-stop for their sticky buns, bagels, and cinnamon rolls, and if you're around for dinner, Café Aroma and La Bella Montagna are local favorites for a cozy, mountain-town Italian meal to cap off the day. Idyll Awhile, a small wine bar in the middle of town, is a great spot for good wine and good music if you want to linger into the evening before the drive home.

Thomas’s Local Tips:

• 🥾 Grab a free day-use permit before you hike – Day hikes in the San Jacinto Wilderness generally require a free permit, available at the Idyllwild Ranger Station right in town. It only takes a few minutes and is well worth doing before you head out.
   
• 🌊 The Grotto is the easiest win in town – This super-easy hike starts from behind the Idyllwild Arts Academy and leads to a serene meadow and a small waterfall grotto, with very little elevation gain. It's the perfect "I don't want to commit to a big hike" option, especially with kids. 
   
• 🚗 Plan for a longer drive, shorter day – At over 2 hours each way, this is more of a "leave early, come home late" trip than a quick jaunt. Hit the road by 7-7:30 AM to maximize your time in town.
   
• 🎨 Don't rush the art walk – With 15+ galleries packed into a few walkable blocks, Idyllwild rewards slow exploring. Budget at least an hour just for wandering Main Street and ducking into shops between trail time.
