Hey AV explorers, Thomas here – if you're looking for a day trip that genuinely feels like you've left California behind, Channel Islands National Park is your move this June. About 1.5 hours from Lancaster to Ventura Harbor, plus a one-hour ferry ride, puts you on one of the most wild and untouched stretches of land in the entire National Park system. Often called the "Galápagos of North America," Channel Islands is one of the least-visited national parks in the country - which means the moment you step off the boat, you get something increasingly rare: actual solitude in a spectacular place.

Santa Cruz Island is the top destination for day-trippers and the most accessible of the five islands. The ferry drops you at Scorpion Anchorage, where towering volcanic cliffs plunge into crystal-clear kelp forests, the endemic island fox trots across your path like it owns the place, and over 200 species of birds fill the air. There are no shops, no restaurants, and no cell service out here – just trails, wildlife, cobblestone beaches, and open Pacific. June is an ideal time to visit: the islands are in full bloom, seas are calming into their summer conditions, and the snorkel and sea cave kayak tours kick into full swing mid-month.

Making it a Full Day:
Board the Island Packers ferry at Ventura Harbor by 9 AM – arrive at the harbor 45 minutes early to check in. The crossing takes about an hour and the wildlife show starts the moment you leave the dock, with dolphins regularly riding the bow wave and sea lions hauled out in the channel. Once on Santa Cruz Island, the Cavern Point Loop (1.7 miles) is the must-do first hike – a short climb rewards you with jaw-dropping coastal cliff views and frequent dolphin and whale sightings offshore.

For more adventure, Channel Islands Adventure Company offers guided sea cave kayak tours and snorkel tours running mid-June through September. Pack all your own food and water – there is nothing for purchase on the island. Ferries typically return to Ventura by 5–6 PM, leaving plenty of time to grab a waterfront dinner at Ventura Harbor Village before the drive home.

• 🎟️ Book your ferry well in advance – Island Packers is the official ferry concessionaire and summer departures fill up fast, especially on weekends. Lock in your tickets at islandpackers.com before you do anything else. Round-trip fares run approximately $72 for adults and $52 for kids.
   
• 🦊 Watch for the island fox – This cat-sized fox is found nowhere else on Earth and has zero fear of humans. They'll walk right up to your pack looking for snacks, so keep your food zipped up and enjoy the encounter from a respectful distance.
   
• 🎒 Pack like there's no store (because there isn't) – Bring more water than you think you need, sunscreen, layers for the ferry ride, snacks, and lunch. The cobblestone beach at Scorpion Anchorage is a perfect lunch spot, but there is absolutely nothing available for purchase once you leave the mainland.
   
• 🚗 Leave the AV early – Aim to be on the road by 6:30–7 AM. The ferry won't wait, and Ventura Harbor parking fills quickly on summer weekends. Parking at the harbor is free on weekdays and paid Friday through Sunday.
