Featured Day Trip ☀️🌼

⛰️ Oak Groves & Mountain Meadows: An Oak Glen Escape
Location: Oak Glen, CA
[Get Directions ➔]

Good day local adventurers, Thomas here with another mountain escape.

Just over 2 hours from the Antelope Valley, Oak Glen is a charming high-country village nestled along the western slopes of the San Bernardino Mountains. Sitting at roughly 5,000 feet, this pocket of orchards, pines, and preserved wilderness is a year-round favorite – but in November, it’s especially magical, with golden leaves, crisp air, and the final glow of fall color before winter settles in.

Start your visit at The Wildlands Conservancy’s Oak Glen Preserve, home to the Montane Botanic Garden and Children’s Outdoor Discovery Center. Wander through trails lined with oak woodlands, redwoods, and meadow grasses as you explore the story of California’s mountain ecology. The preserve is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and its interpretive paths make for the perfect family-friendly outing.

From there, stretch your legs along the Preservation Point Trail, a moderate 2-mile loop offering views of Yucaipa Ridge and the surrounding canyons. If you’re looking for something gentler, stroll the Pond Trail or enjoy a quiet picnic near the shaded creekside benches.

When hunger calls, make your way to Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho, a historic apple farm established in 1906. Enjoy freshly pressed cider, hot pies, or a bite from their seasonal grill – all surrounded by orchards glowing in late-autumn light. Many local farms wind down their apple picking in early November, but the shops and bakeries stay open for the season’s final harvest weekends.

As the sun dips behind the ridgeline, golden light spills through the oaks, painting the valley in warm hues – a serene ending to a day spent in the San Bernardino highlands.

Thomas’s Local Tips:
  • 🌳 Start at the Preserve – Parking is limited, so arrive early and explore before the midday rush.
  • 🍂 Dress in layers – Even sunny days cool quickly in the 5,000-foot elevation air.
  • 🥾 Go easy or go high – The Pond Trail is a peaceful 1-mile stroll, while Preservation Point offers more elevation and sweeping views.
  • 🥧 End with apple pie – Stop by Los Rios Rancho for cider, baked goods, and live folk music on select weekends.
  • 📸 Late light, best sight – Aim for golden hour near the pond or meadow for stunning photo ops framed by oak silhouettes.
Nature's calling, it's time to pick up... See you out there!
